Traffic accident time change 'won't affect insurance premiums'RSS Feed
Plans to introduce double British Summertime to cut the traffic accident rate in the UK will not mean lower insurance premiums, it has been claimed.
The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) is warning that the cost of insuring a car is continuing to rise "at record levels", despite a fall in the number of accident claims.
A further drop in the car and motorcycle accident rate from a permanent change in the clocks will "unlikely" alter things in motorists' favour, the IAM's director of policy and research Neil Greig argued.
It comes as the government announces that it is looking at shifting clocks in Britain an hour forward, meaning darker mornings and lighter evenings.
Mr Greig remains confident that double British Summertime would cut fatalities, however, as it is when children are returning home from school unsupervised that most accidents happen.
"They may be some issues for the farming industry and for the construction industry having to work in the early hours of the morning in the dark for example, but overall from a road safety perspective we think it's good news," he added.
