White van goes on tour to reduce accident claims

A white van is to go tour for two weeks visiting major construction sites in the north-west of England, in an effort to tackle the problem of work-related injuries and accident claims in the industry.

The White Van Road Show starts today (May 17th) with experts from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and the construction industry touring a number of building sites on an educational mission.

Wayne Crumpton, HSE's principal inspector for construction in Merseyside and Cheshire, said the plan was to visit as many construction workers as possible to remind of the dangers they face every day.

He said: "The White Van Road Show will aim to raise awareness about the risks workers on construction sites face every day. I hope it will help to cut the number of deaths and injuries in the future.

"Good health and safety doesn't have to cost a lot of money. It can be as simple as making sure building sites are kept clean and tidy, or avoiding working on roofs in bad weather," he added.

There are more than 800,000 construction accidents in the European Union each year, causing 1,200 deaths, according to Ethical Corporation.
