Ventilation systems 'can reduce workplace accident claims'

Businesses may be able to bring down the number of accident claims from employees by installing effective workplace ventilation systems, it is reported.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has been hosting a series of interactive roadshows to publicise the risks associated with exposure to dust, gas, mist, fumes and vapours.

It has been targeting the information sessions at small firms in industries such as welding and stonemasonry, with the aim of controlling conditions such as asthma and silicosis.

The HSE has been encouraging the proper use of local exhaust ventilation (LEV) systems, which safely remove contaminants from the air.

"Many employers already buy LEV equipment to protect workers' health, but to make a difference it must be properly installed, used and maintained," stressed Stephanie Beach, the LEV communications manager at the HSE.

The HSE recently launched a separate campaign aimed at reducing noise-related ill health in the workplace, by encouraging manufacturers to create quieter tools and machinery.
