'Tragic' accident at work left vineyard owner deadRSS Feed
An accident at work has seen a distribution company fined £200,000 by a court in Cornwall.
Gregory Distribution Ltd was fined after pleading guilty to contributing to an accident at work that resulted in the death of a vineyard owner, following a prosecution brought by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
George Musgrave, the owner of Polmassick Vineyard at St Ewe in Cornwall, was killed when a load of empty bottles fell from the tail lift of a lorry.
HSE inspector Simon Jones said: "This tragic accident highlights the dangers involved in unloading large and heavy loads using a tail lift.
"Employers should ensure that employees are given the right equipment, information, instruction and training to allow them to unload loads safely."
He added that businesses need to make sure a competent person examines tail lifts every six months.
The news comes as the potential for accident claims has been highlighted by a number of fines being issued to companies found to be negligent.
