Traffic accidents in Wales hit record lowRSS Feed
People suffering from burns or broken bones as a result of car accidents is lower than ever in Wales, the latest statistics reveal.
The number of people injured in traffic accidents in 2009 fell to 10,354, down 832 from 2008.
Of these just over a 1,000 were classed as serious, down by 13 per cent from the previous year. Deaths on Welsh roads also fell from 142 in 2008 to 125 last year.
The figures reveal that accidents are at the lowest level in the country since records began in 1968.
Welsh Assembly Government deputy first minister Ieuan Wyn Jones said: "I believe it is only right to pay tribute to all the organisations involved in road safety who have contributed to this success.
"The Welsh Assembly Government will continue to work in partnership with local authorities, the police, the fire and rescue service and road safety organisations to highlight the importance of road safety and to remind all road users of their responsibilities to themselves and others."
Recent figures for road traffic accidents in Scotland were similarly positive, with deaths and injuries at their lowest level since the 1940s.
