Traffic accidents in Scotland at lowest level for 60 yearsRSS Feed
Deaths as a result of road traffic accidents in Scotland have plummeted to a 60-year low, new figures reveal.
Year-on-year, the number of road deaths fell by 20 per cent in 2009 to 216, the lowest loss of life on Scottish roads since 1948.
People suffering injuries, from incidents like a motorcycle accident, have also fallen to their lowest level since 1949.
Commenting on the 2009 Reported Road Casualty statistics, transport minister Stewart Stevenson said: "This is a welcome drop to the lowest number of casualties for 60 years, continuing the downward trend witnessed in recent years.
"While progress in cutting casualties is evident and we have again exceeded the GB targets to reduce deaths and serious injuries, we continue to do everything we can improve road safety."
He added that the vision was for Scotland to stamp out road deaths completely.
The news comes after a court in Scotland heard that a 17 year-old died in crash after being a passenger in a car involved in a 90mph race with another vehicle, the Scotsman reports.
