Traffic accident risk highlighted by poor driving habitsRSS Feed
An accident claim resulting from a traffic accident caused by someone eating or drinking at the wheel could be more likely than most people realise, new research suggests.
Over half of drivers (53 per cent) admit to eating or drinking while driving, according to a study from The Co-operative.
The research suggests that many drivers routinely put others and themselves at risk of a traffic accident by engaging in distracting activities at the wheel.
Some 12 per cent of drivers admit to smoking while driving and 11 per cent say they get organised for meetings when they should be concentrating on the road.
Seven per cent of drivers admit to still talking on their mobile phones while driving, despite changes to the law making it an offence.
"Taking a sip of a drink or a quick bite of a sandwich whilst driving may seem harmless, however the consequence of taking your full concentration off the road could result in a road traffic accident which could change lives forever," commented Co-operative Insurance function leader Grant Mitchell.
The news comes after both Scotland and Wales reported the lowest incidence of traffic accidents in decades.
