Steel firm fined after accident at workRSS Feed
A steel firm has been fined after an employee's sustained severe injuries to his arm and hand during an accident at work.
Ian Sutherland was working for Forth Steel Ltd, marking two tonne steel plates with identifying numbers and stacking them on top of each other at the time of the incident.
His right arm was crushed when he reached between two metal plates and the top one slipped from the hook of the lifting machinery.
Mr Sutherland's right forearm was broken and the middle finger on his right hand was broken, which left him needing surgery to insert a six inch steel plate in his arm and pins in his finger.
One month before the accident, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) had inspected the site and emphasised the importance of using the correct lifting equipment and training employees well.
HSE inspector Kerry Cringan said: "This was a serious and entirely preventable incident that has left Mr Sutherland with lasting pain and discomfort, and affected his quality of life."
This comes after Merseyside-based laminate flooring company Universal Mouldings was fined after an accident at work caused severe injury to an employee's hand.
