Speed camera accident claim risk shownRSS Feed
Speed cameras could be contributing to accident claims, new research suggests.
In a poll, insurance firm LV= found that four-fifths (81 per cent) of motorists look at their speedometers rather than the car in front of them or the road when approaching a speed camera.
Moreover, the potential for an accident claim was raised by the admission by five per cent of drivers that they instantly slam on the brakes to avoid a fine, risking a rear-end shunt.
A third of motorist said they have seen a traffic accident or a near miss as a result of erratic driving caused by a speed camera's presence.
John O'Roarke, spokesman for LV=, said: "Speed cameras have been a feature on UK roads for almost 20 years, yet the feedback from drivers is that while they may reduce speed they also appear to impair driving ability or at the least concentration on the road."
The news comes after several local authorities have decided to cut costs by turning off speed cameras.
