Somerset farmers get accident at work adviceRSS Feed
A workshop has been held to raise the awareness of accident claims in the farming industry in Somerset.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) held the event in attempt to reduce the number of accidents at work in the farming sector.
Last year, 38 agricultural workers in the UK were killed while working, making farming by far the most dangerous industry in the country.
The safety and health awareness day was held last week at Brymore School of Technology in Cannington and saw around 350 local farmers in attendance.
Safety demonstrations were given on six farming activities - quad bikes, machinery maintenance, roof and height work, manual handling, livestock handling and telehandlers.
HSE agricultural champion Sandy Blair said: "Modern agriculture of course still requires very hard work over long hours, but it doesn't need to be the most dangerous occupation in Britain.
"It is time for the sector to include the safety and better health of its people amongst its primary aims."
The HSE held a similar event at the recent Great Yorkshire Show in Harrogate.
