Satnav may increase accident claims riskRSS Feed
Motorists have been urged against following their satnavs "blindly" to avoid a traffic accident.
The Institute of Advanced Motorists noted that drivers should take extra care when using their satnav on unfamiliar roads.
Institute chief examiner Peter Rodger explained: "Taking care on unfamiliar roads, especially on bends, and planning ahead to spot hazards early, will make your drive much safer."
He added that safer driving will prevent diversions into fields and - more serious - crashes.
Earlier this month, research by insurance company Churchill indicated that many drivers leave themselves at risk during cold weather by not properly clearing their windscreens, which could leave them open to making an accident claim if involved in a crash.
Motorists between the age of 25 and 34 were found to be most at risk, with more than a third (37 per cent) admitting that they do not have time to clear their windscreens.
More than nine in ten drivers over the age of 65 claim that they never drive when they cannot see out of their windscreen properly.
