Rochdale firm fined for accident at workRSS Feed
An accident at work that crushed an employee has seen a Rochdale engineering firm fined for breaching health and safety regulations.
Carter International was fined £10,000 and ordered to pay costs after a 21-year-old worker suffered broken bones when a two-tonne piece of machinery fell onto him.
The labourer was left with a broken collar bone and several leg fractures that left him unable to work for ten months.
Despite receiving an improvement notice from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in 2005, an investigation found that lifting machinery at the site had not been properly secured.
HSE inspector David Norton commented: "It is vital that companies where workers routinely lift very heavy objects not only provide the right equipment, but also have proper processes in place and plan each job properly to prevent these types of incident."
The news comes as Essex-based Ductwork Environmental Services is ordered to pay a fine for not purchasing compulsory insurance for its employees.
