Redgrave suffers broken bones in accidentRSS Feed
A handful of broken bones was the reward for five-time Olympic gold medallist Sir Steve Redgrave after a suffering a serious cycling accident.
Among multiple broken bones, Sir Steve fractured his cheek bone, wrist and several ribs after a tyre blew on his bicycle.
He had been competing in a 3,000-mile Race Across America charity event and was in cycling in the Appalachian Mountains, just 300 miles short of the finish.
Commenting, Sir Steve said: "Of all the things that possibly could have stopped me - tiredness, fatigue, diabetes - a simple blow out on the front wheel of a bike going around a corner can cause such pain."
He had been competing in the endurance race in a bid to raise £100,000 for Sport Relief and the Steve Redgrave Fund which was set up in 2001 and has already surpassed the initial £5 million target that was set.
