Quad bike accident claims could be reduced with new initiative

A reduction in accident claims could be the result of a new scheme promoting better safety on quad bikes.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) will be inspecting quad bikes on farms in Scotland in an attempt to reduce the number of injuries and deaths that occur as a result of poor safety procedures on all-terrain vehicles (ATVs).

The unannounced visits will take place throughout June and inspectors will be looking at head protection, vehicle maintenance and training.

HSE inspector Gillian McLean said: "More than half of all quad bike riders have been thrown from their vehicle at some point, so it is vital that farmers ensure all their workers wear helmets, are properly trained and that all bikes are well maintained."

Statistics quoted by the HSE showed that over one thousand people are injured and two are killed using ATVs every year.

The need for wearing appropriate head gear was highlighted recently after the Department for Transport released its motorcycle helmet ratings.
