Potential accident claims from side-door elevators targeted by HSERSS Feed
The risk of accident claims resulting from the dropping of heavy objects from manually operated side-door elevators has been highlighted by a number of recent incidents, prompting the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to issue a warning to employers.
Incidents occurring in Northern Europe were brought to the attention of the HSE by the North Sea Offshore Authorities Forum (NSOAF) which represents the offshore safety regulators of Denmark, the Faroe Islands, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and the UK.
Accident claims could be reduced with a number of measures which the HSE has outlined to users of such equipment.
The HSE wants to see that equipment is fully risk-assessed, maintained in an efficient state, suitable supervision is in place and that users are properly trained and informed about risks.
Accident risks from working around machinery in the construction industry were recently marked out by the HSE after inspections in the East Midlands revealed that many building sites in the region were not managing risks appropriately.
