Potential accident claim as worker loses fingerRSS Feed
An accident claim could be one result of an accident at work that left an employee off the job for six months.
The worker at Pinguin Food's Boston site lost a finger after his hand was crushed when he tried to straighten some boxes on an automatic pallestising machine.
International frozen vegetable supplier Pinguin was fined £10,000 for the incident and ordered to pay full costs of £3,500 after pleading guilty to breaching health and safety regulations.
Health and Safety Executive (HSE) inspector Scott Wynne commented: "The automatic palletising machine can carry up to a ton of boxes so the employee could easily have suffered more severe injuries.
"Pinguin should have had robust supervision and monitoring that should have identified staff were overriding interlocks and stopped it happening."
The HSE advises that when operating machinery, workers should be able to recognise dangerous parts and perform suitable risk assessment to prevent injury.
