Police warn of traffic accident chaos from speed camera lossRSS Feed
The UK is at risk of an increase in traffic accidents if speed cameras are switched off, Britain's top traffic policeman has said.
Chief Constable Mick Giannasi has warned ministers that lives will be put risk at by the decision by councils to turn off speed cameras to save money.
In letters that have been seen by the Times, Mr Giannnasi said that four-fifths of all cameras will be out of action by 2015, meaning car and motorcycle accidents will be more likely.
"If nothing is put in place, speeds will rise and casualties will grow," he told the newspaper.
Councils up and down the country will be forced to axe speed cameras as part of major cost saving drives required by the coalition government in Westminster and after 40 per cent of the road safety grant to local councils was cut.
Julie Townsend, deputy chief executive of the road safety charity Brake, said: "We are horrified that vital road safety work is grinding to a halt as a result of draconian funding cuts made by the government."
