Paragliding accident claims warningRSS Feed
Accident claims from paragliding are in the spotlight after an amateur paraglider broke his back.
Roy Dixon crashed the £300 glider he bought from auction site eBay after taking to the air with no training or experience.
He said he should have joined a club and received lessons, but decided instead to teach himself by studying videos from Youtube.
This is third incident in just a few days, according to The Journal, a newspaper covering the north-east of England.
Gary Stenhouse, chairman of the Northumbria Hang Gliding and Paragliding Club, told the paper: "It would be utter stupidity to try to use a paraglider without the proper training.
"The trouble is you don't need a licence so anyone can effectively buy a paraglider and throw themselves off the side of a mountain."
Recently, a British Army Major was killed in a paragliding accident. He was on an adventure training exercise in Spain when he hit a tree at 100 mph.
