Packaging firm fined after accident at workRSS Feed
An accident at work that left a man with severed fingers has led to a fine for the firm responsible.
The 49-year-old man was attempting to clear a blockage in a machine at Linpac Packaging Ltd's St Helen's factory when he lost the top of three fingers on his right hand.
Linpac was prosecuted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) for failing to protect workers from dangerous machine parts.
The investigation found that workers were regularly exposed to a large rotating screw known as an auger.
Linpac, which operates in 19 countries, was fined £5,000 at St Helen's Magistrates' Court and ordered to pay costs.
HSE inspector Chris Goddard said: "Unfortunately, the company became used to the machine being blocked, and did not realise the danger workers faced when they removed the pipe to clear jams."
It comes as Lichfield food maker Soleco UK is fined after a man suffered a broken bone on a moving conveyor.
