Northumbrian Water pays £34k in accident claimRSS Feed
Northumbrian Water has been ordered to pay £34,000 after an employee that was crushed in a potentially fatal incident made an accident claim.
The water company was fined £17,000 and ordered to pay costs of around the same amount, after Robert Ayers was crushed between a loading bucket and construction vehicle cab.
Commenting on the decision, reached at Lowestoft Magistrate's Court, Health and Safety Executive (HSE) inspector Richard Hines said: "This should serve as a serious warning to all companies that they must ensure the health and safety of their work force - it is their responsibility.
"HSE will not hesitate to take action against those who fall short of their duty - and the legal requirements - in such a way."
The decision comes after Rotherham Council was fined £75,000 after an employee was killed by a reversing truck.
Brocklebank & Company's eight-wheeled tipper wagon was delivering asphalt to a Rotherham site on Fitzwilliam Road when council employee Gordon Duffield was knocked down.
