Newsprint firms fined for accident at workRSS Feed
An accident at work that left a man needing a leg amputation has seen two newsprint firms fined.
West Ferry Printers of Tower Hamlets and Meta Management Services of Telford were each fined £17,500 after pleading guilty to breaching health and safety regulations.
The City of London Magistrates' court heard that the worker was removing newspaper reels from a conveyor when one became stuck.
He was trying to dislodge the reel when his leg became trapped between the roller and the moving conveyor, resulting in such severe damage to his left leg that it had to be amputated.
Both of the defendants were aware of the risks from dangerous machinery and had been advised to carry out an assessment of the risks from the conveyor prior to the incident," commented Health and Safety Executive inspector Chris Tilley.
"If they had done so the incident may have been prevented."
The news comes as crisps maker Walkers Snack Foods and chemical distributor Omnichem were fined a total of £350,000 after a worker was killed by a cloud of toxic gas.
