New tower crane rules could reduce accident claim cases

New rules have come into effect which mean that the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) must be notified whenever conventional tower cranes are installed on construction sites.

The regulations, which came into force on April 6th, place the duty to notify on the employer.

Construction firms are required to notify the HSE of facts such as the site address where the crane is being used, the date of the crane's thorough examination and whether any defects posing a risk of serious injury were identified.

The HSE confirmed that all notifications are subject to an administration charge of £20 and they will be retained in a register that is open to public scrutiny.

Earlier this month, the HSE revealed that almost one in four construction sites it visited in March failed their safety inspections.

The organization has been carrying out an intensive campaign aimed at reducing death and injury in one of Britain's most dangerous industries.
