Motorcycle accident claims 'can be reduced with safe helmets'

Accident claims resulting from motorcyclists could be reduced if bikers wore the safest helmets available to them, it has been claimed.

The waning was issued after the latest motorcycle helmet ratings were issued by the Department for Transport’s Safety Helmet Assessment and Rating Programme (SHARP).

Road Safety Minister Mike Penning said that around 50 deaths a year could be prevented if motorcyclists chose safe helmets.

He said: "I hope that we can improve safety for motorcyclists and reduce the number of tragedies we see on the roads each year."

Mr Penning said that by providing bikers with safety training and information and reminding drivers to look out for motorcyclists, accidents could be reduced.

SHARP found that there could be up to 70 per cent variance in the safety standards of some helmets.

Motorcycle expert Smartrider.co.uk advises bikers not to buy a second-hand helmet, as helmets have a lifespan of only around two to three years and often it is not possible to know what has happened to it.

It warns that dropping a helmet from more than two feet makes it unsafe.
