Mesothelioma vaccine breakthrough for accident claims victimsRSS Feed
Workers that suffer from mesothelioma resulting from an accident at work are likely to benefit from a new vaccine.
The vaccine, which has been developed by researchers at the Erasmus Medical Center in the Netherlands, has been proven safe in recent tests.
Lead researcher Joachim Aerts, who published his findings in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, hopes that the research can be used to support further development of the vaccine to treat the cancer in accident claims patients.
He said: "We hope that by further development of our method it will be possible to increase survival in patients with mesothelioma and eventually vaccinate persons who have been in contact with asbestos."
The findings come after the government announced plans to give more financial support to those suffering from the condition, increasing the minimum payment under the mesothelioma scheme to £11,678.
The maximum payment level has also been increased, from £52,772 to £75,176.
