Men's Health Week to highlight accident claims

As Men's Health Week takes place in the run-up to Fathers' Day, work place accident claims have been highlighted by a leading accident prevention body.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has warned men that they are much more likely than women to suffer an accident while at work.

Figures released by the HSE show that the great majority of fatal and major non-fatal accidents at work occur among men.

In addition, it is estimated that around 6,500 deaths a year occur as a result of workplace "exposures" with the farming and construction industries highlighted as particularly dangerous sectors.

The HSE said that young men in the 16-24 age bracket were the most likely to suffer an accident, while in farming it is older workers who are most likely to suffer serious injury or be killed.

Men are also much less likely to talk about health issues and seek medical help than are women.

The goal of Men's Health Week is to raise awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease among men and boys.

It runs from June 14th to the 20th.
