McDonalds fined after accident at work in WandsworthRSS Feed
Fast food chain McDonalds has been taken to court after an accident at work left one employee with burns and partial blindness.
A man working as a maintenance operative at the Wandsworth Bridge drive-through restaurant was given an acid-based cleaner to try to unblock a waste pipe.
The corrosive chemical blew back into his face, resulting in burns and blindness that he has still not fully recovered from.
"No risk assessment was carried out to ensure this product was safe to use, he was not properly supervised while using it, he was not given any training to reduce the risk of an accident, nor was he provided with protective clothing," said Wandsworth Council's environment spokesperson Sarah McDermott.
As a result of the accident at work, McDonalds was fined £5,000 and made to pay over £15,000 in prosecution costs.
It follows news that a laminate flooring company in Merseyside has been fined after an employee suffered severe injuries to his hand in a machine accident.
