Mansfield Council fined as worker falls down wellRSS Feed
Mansfield District Council has been fined after a worker employed to clear litter fell six metres down a dry well during an accident at work.
Three workers were clearing litter that had accumulated between a metal grid and a mesh cover over the well when one stood on the mesh and fell into the well.
The employee, who does not wish to be named, suffered a dislocated elbow and cuts to his head, arms and leg as a result of the accident at work.
Mansfield District Council was fined £5,000 and ordered to pay £5,700 in costs.
HSE inspector Stuart Pilkington, said the work should have been better planned and it was clear the workers were at risk of falling down the well.
"Falls from height are the biggest causes of workplace deaths and it's crucial that employers make sure work is properly planned, supervised and carried out to protect staff from these risks," he added.
Meanwhile, an employee of Burnham-on-Crouch company Machine Hire almost severed his left arm during an accident at work involving a cross cut saw.
