Machinery injury may result in accident claimRSS Feed
A pet food manufacturer in Lincolnshire has been reminded of the importance of avoiding accident claims after an employee's hand was damaged by machinery.
Paul Knowles, 50, was working at Fold Hill Foods near Boston in January 2009 when he placed his hand into a bagging machine that was supposed to be shut off.
However, the device restarted unexpectedly, pulling his fingers into the mechanism and causing a deep cut to his middle finger, which required him to take some time off work.
Fold Hill Foods was fined £1,250 and ordered to pay costs of £1,545 by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) for failing to keep equipment in good working order, something which may also lead to a company facing accident claims.
"Protection devices are there for a very good reason to stop accidents such as this occurring," said HSE inspector Scott Wynne.
"Mr Knowles was very lucky not to have suffered more serious injuries."
It follows news that the HSE has prosecuted AB Waste Management in Stourbridge after a guard rail gave way at its premises, causing severe injuries to one worker.
