Kids urged to wear cycle helmets to avoid traffic accidentsRSS Feed
One road safety group has launched a new child cycling helmet initiative in a bid to reduce the number of head trauma traffic accidents involving kids.
The Bicycle Helmet Initiative Trust (BHIT) has attempted to change their approach in the scheme on the basis of the different age groups they are targeting.
However, the underlying message is the same: put on your cycling helmet. With around 70 per cent of child cyclist deaths due to head injury, this initiative has the potential to significantly reduce the number of accident claims arising from similar incidents.
Commenting on the launch of the scheme, which began last week, BHIT chief executive Angela Lee explained the importance of emphasising different aspects of safety to different sorts of children.
She noted: "We found a lot of older children are concerned about their image, whereas younger children simply don't understand what brain injury means and the effects that it could have on everyday life should the worst happen.
"We have tried to make the programmes fun and interactive yet informative."
Young men are among the most likely to overtake poorly on Britain's roads, according to the Institute of Advanced Motorists, which could result in a collision with a cyclist.
