'Keep tyres inflated to reduce traffic accident risk'

Motorists who drive on under-inflated tyres could be risking a traffic accident and even an accident claim.

According to Cooper Tire Europe, drivers have to make sure their tyres are fully inflated before heading off on holiday this summer.

Families could be carrying an extra 210 kg when driving to their holiday destinations, but many do not realise that they need to compensate for the extra weight by increasing tyre pressures.

Motorists have been advised by the company to check handbooks to find out exactly how much extra air is required for heavily laden vehicles.

The situation is even worse as recent research suggests that up to 95 per of drivers may be using under-inflated tyres normally.

"Apart from the potential danger to the occupants of the car, driving with under-inflated tyres can land you with a fine and points on your licence," explained Cooper Tire Europe managing director, Julian Baldwin.

The advice comes as safety campaigners are warning that turning off speed cameras may increase the number of road traffic accidents, such as motorcycle accidents.
