Improving key roads 'may reduce accident claims'RSS Feed
Accident claims from traffic accidents could be reduced by targeting certain danger hotspots with investment, it has been claimed.
Based on road traffic accident figures released yesterday (June 30th), the Road Safety Foundation believes that by improving a small percentage of roads in the UK, deaths and serious injuries can be significantly reduced.
The report found that just ten per cent of roads account for half of all fatal collisions.
One road, the A537 between Macclesfield and Buxton, was rated the most persistently dangerous road in the UK.
Scotland has the highest average risk rating for roads, while the West Midlands has the lowest.
Dr Joanne Hill, director of the Road Safety Foundation, said: "This year's report shows that not only can Britain reduce roads deaths and serious injuries but that, by targeting a relatively small mileage of high risk roads, we can do so with good economic returns."
The findings come shortly after both Scotland and Wales reported that the numbers of people killed or seriously injured on roads in the two countries were at the lowest level for decades.
