Hotel firm fined after potential accident claims riskRSS Feed
A hotel company has been fined after putting builders at risk of health and safety incidents at a construction site.
Newquay-based Bluechip Hotels was fined £3,000 after pleading guilty to breaching sections 2(1) and 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
The offences in question related to a failure to provide guardrails on a bridge over an excavation site in the coastal town.
Bodmin Magistrates Court also ordered the firm to pay £2,000 in costs following the legal proceedings.
Speaking after the hearing, Health and Safety Executive inspector Barry Trudgian stressed that construction companies must make employee safety a priority rather than an after-thought.
He added: "Simple measures can be taken to ensure the safety of employees on construction sites, such as providing guardrails where necessary and keeping the site clear of hazards such as rubbish."
The court ruling comes after Driffield-based construction firm Shane Homes was last week fined £1,000 and ordered to pay £799 in costs for using unsafe scaffolding.
