HSE committed to reducing accident claim rate on building sitesRSS Feed
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is set to launch an intensive inspection initiative to crack down on the number of accidents occurring on building sites.
Beginning today (March 1st), inspectors will focus on refurbishment and roofing work being carried out by construction firms by making unannounced visits to sites.
Inspectors will check safety provisions in areas where accident claims are common, such as where employees are working at height.
HSE principal inspector of construction for Berkshire, Hampshire and Oxfordshire Charles Gilby underlined the importance of the strategy for preventing needless injury and death.
"HSE does not think a lax attitude to health and safety in one of the more dangerous industries is acceptable, especially when many of the incidents are completely avoidable by taking commonsense actions and precautions," he added.
The incident comes after Suffolk company Eastern Hardware was fined after a worker fell through a fragile roof when installing some air conditioning at an Express Composites site in Ellough.
