Firm fined for accident at workRSS Feed
A Northern Irish firm has been fined after one of its workers was seriously injured in an accident at work.
Serious injuries were suffered by the employee when he fell into an underground chamber last year, damaging his head and spine and leaving him in a "paraplegic condition" with brain damage.
The incident happened during the construction of a 6.4m underground water collection chamber in Bangor.
John Graham (Dromore) Limited admitted two breaches of health and safety legislation and was fined £80,000.
The NI Health and Safety Executive (HSENI) maintains that during the construction of the chamber, the access areas in the roof of the structure were not covered satisfactorily.
Kevin Campbell, an inspector with the HSENI, said: "It is vital that companies identify and address hazards within the workplace."
He added: "These systems need to be communicated to the workforce, implemented, maintained, and updated when necessary. Simple measures would have prevented workers on this project from falling."
The HSENI is the body responsible for health and safety in the workplace throughout Northern Ireland.
