A Southampton-based demolition has been fined for an accident at work in which a teenager was blinded in one eye.
The teenager, from Bradford, was hit in the left eye by a splinter when using a pickaxe to lever up wooden floorboards during the demolition of a mill in Tameside.
Dovestone Contractors Ltd was fined £8,000 after the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) said the company had failed to ensure the 19-year-old was wearing goggles.
Neil Martin, the investigating inspector at HSE, said: "He hasn't returned to work in the demolition industry because he's frightened of losing the sight in his other eye. He may also have difficulty trying to get a driver's licence. This was a life-changing injury."
This comes after Crouchmoor farm in Cambridgeshire was fined following the electrocution of a farm worker, when an irrigation pipe he was lifting touched a 33,000 volt power line overhead.
