Firework display organiser jailed after skipping compensation paymentRSS Feed
The former employer of a man who had to undergo 19 reconstructive surgeries after being injured in an accident at work has been jailed after failing to pay him his rightful compensation, reports claim.
Chris Hignell was disfigured and blinded in one eye in a horrific accident at work while organising a fireworks display when a professional grade mortar went off in Mr Hignell's face, reports the Bristol Evening Post.
He was left needing 19 reconstructive surgical procedures but still cannot yet go back to work.
Jason Edgecombe was ordered to pay Mr Hignell £5,000 in compensation after he was found to be in breach of health and safety regulations and using false insurance certificates.
He was given a suspended prison sentence of 36 weeks, on the condition he made consistent payments toward the compensation.
However, he failed to do this, missing a £200 instalment in October and failing to turn up in court about another breach of his suspended sentence.
Meanwhile, Hochtief Construction AG has been fined £266,000 after an employee was crushed to death during an accident at work.
