Farmers urged to avoid accident at work riskRSS Feed
In a move that ought to reduce the risk of farmers suffering an accident at work, safety harnesses are being advised for all tractor drivers.
With one in four fatalities (24 per cent) in agriculture in the last ten years being the result of a form of traffic accident, the advice from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is aimed at reducing deaths in the industry.
When driving on sloped ground and there is a risk of the vehicle overturning, drivers should wear lap straps when driving tractors with roll-over protective structures.
HSE inspector Harry Bottesch said: "Safety cabs have had to be fitted to tractors, by law, since the early 1970s and this has been a tremendous success in reducing fatalities but there are still several accidents every year where the driver is thrown from an overturning tractor."
The advice for Scottish farm workers comes as similar action is being urged for farmers in the East Midlands as harvest time approaches.
