Farmer fined after worker loses legRSS Feed
A farmer has been fined after a one of his employees was the victim of a horrific accident at work.
The worker, 23, had to have his leg amputated at the scene after he caught it in the rotating blades of a harvesting machine while attempting to clear a blockage.
Farmer Peter Turnbull was driving the harvesting machine when a blockage occurred. He left the machine running while he went to clear it, at which point the worker came to assist, catching his leg in the machine.
Mr Turnbull, of GR Turnbull and Sons which is near Pickering, North Yorkshire, was fined £10,000 and ordered to pay £1,698 in costs.
After the hearing. Health and Safety Executive inspector Charlie Callis said: "Incidents of this kind are all too common in the farming industry, and the outcomes are inevitably equally horrific."
He added: "Taking unnecessary risks like this is never a sensible option, and Mr Turnbull could and should have done more to mitigate those risks."
The Scottish Farmer reported this summer that Farmers for Action has blamed high farm accident statistics on supermarkets putting increasing price pressure on the industry.
