Employee loses parts of fingers in accident at workRSS Feed
A laminate flooring company in Merseyside has been penalised after an accident at work severely damaged an employee's hand.
Christopher Sillitoe was working at Universal Mouldings' factory when his hand came into contact with a large circular saw, resulting in him losing sections of three of his fingers and breaking his thumb.
Worryingly, a court heard that workers at Universal Mouldings were routinely expected to reach under a 27cm gap under the blade's guard to retrieve pieces of cut laminate, putting them at risk of an accident at work.
"The company should have realised it was putting its staff in danger every day they worked on the machine, and found another way of carrying out the work," commented Jane Carroll, investigating inspector at the Health and Safety Executive.
Last month, a London-based waste management company was fined after a worker's legs were crushed between two steel frames while he unloaded a truck.
