Electrocution risk could have prompted accident claimRSS Feed
Leeds City Council has been fined by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) after a lorry driver was nearly electrocuted in an incident which could have resulted in an accident claim.
The driver's life was put in danger when he lifted the tipper body of his vehicle directly under a power line at the council's Red Hall Estates storage site in Shadwell.
Electricity arced to his vehicle, blowing out the tyres and putting the driver in danger of severe injury, although fortunately he was not hurt.
"Signs and barriers should have been in place, but the council failed to do this," commented HSE inspector Charlie Callis.
"Around 1,000 electrical incidents at work are reported to HSE each year and about 25 people die of their injuries."
It follows news that a rubber manufacturer in Manchester has been fined after a worker narrowly escaped with his life following a factory explosion.
