County Durham fatal traffic accident rate 'lowest in 36 years'RSS Feed
The fatal traffic accident rate in County Durham has fallen to the lowest level since police boundaries were redrawn 36 years ago.
A total of 16 people were killed on the roads of County Durham and Darlington in 2010, two fewer than the previous low of 18 in 2009.
Inspector Ken Cook of the joint Cleveland and Durham Strategic Roads Policing Department welcomed the news, but said every road death is one too many.
"Our absolute priority remains to reduce this number even further in the coming years," he added.
Of the fatalities, six were pedestrians, five were vehicle drivers, one a passenger in a car, one a bus driver and one a rider of an electric wheelchair.
There were also two motorcycle accidents that left the riders dead.
"Tragically last year sixteen families had to face up to the reality of losing a loved one as a result of a traffic collision on our roads, an unimaginable loss," said Inspector Cook.
The news comes after concerns were raised about accident claims arising from the removal of lights from a roundabout in Worcester.
