Company fined after worker crushed to deathRSS Feed
A company has been fined £266,000 after an accident at work during which an employee sustained fatal injuries.
Ondrej Hladik died while working for Hochtief Construction AG when the telehandler he was driving crushed him.
It is believed that the boom lowered, crushing Mr Hladik when he was leaning through a missing window in the device.
The telehandler was said to be in extremely bad condition and it is believed that if the missing window had been in place, the accident would not have occurred.
Following the conviction, Elaine Taylor, head of the health and safety division at the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service, said that Mr Hladik's death was "entirely preventable".
"Hochtief did not have in place a system to ensure that its plant was adequately inspected and maintained and this resulted in a vehicle being used on site when it was in an appalling condition."
Meanwhile, packaging firm Glossop Carton and Print Ltd has been fined £50,000 after an employee died in an accident at work after the machine he was working inside was switched on.
