Company fined after accident at workRSS Feed
An accident at work that left a worker with a broken back has seen the firm responsible fined £8,000.
Barry Derbyshire was carrying out maintenance on a machine used to make exhaust pipes when he fell more than two metres, fracturing one vertebra and leaving him unable to walk for six weeks.
A Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation found that there had never been a handrail on the scaffold tower on which he had been working, as it was felt this could interfere with machine access.
The company, Klarius UK, pleaded guilty to breaching health and safety laws at Newcastle-under-Lyme Magistrates Court.
HSE inspector Lynne Boulton said: "Barry Derbyshire did nothing wrong, but as a result of this fall, he's been left with life-changing injuries. The company had a clear lack of appreciation of risk"
The HSE has highlighted, on a number of recent occasions, the dangers of working at height as a key cause of accidents on building sites.
