Campaign underway to reduce accident claims among stonemasonsRSS Feed
Efforts are underway to reduce the number of accident claims among stone workers in the south-east of England.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has stated that an event for stonemasons in Vauxhall, south London, was such a resounding success that further gatherings are being arranged to meet the demand.
There have been at least five fatalities across London and the south-east involving this area of work over the past five years, according to the organisation.
HSE inspector Steve Kirton said these events are crucial in raising awareness about some of the obvious and less well-known hazards that exist in stone workshops.
In these working environments, workers need to be aware of "the long-term and potentially fatal respiratory problems caused by breathing in stone dust and the risks involved in operating handheld power tools", Mr Kirton added.
Meanwhile, the HSE has launched its Estates Excellence project in the south-east of England.
Specialists are set to visit a range of businesses in the Slough area later this month to deliver free training workshops tailored to firms' specific needs.
