Cambridgeshire traffic accident reduction scheme praisedRSS Feed
A Cambridgeshire and Peterborough traffic accident reduction scheme has been recognised for cutting injuries on a dangerous stretch of road.
Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Road Safety Partnership (CPRSP), and Speed Check Services (SCS), won a Prince Michael International Road Safety Award after reducing serious injuries from traffic and motorcycle accidents on the A14 by two-thirds (68 per cent).
The 22km stretch between Spittals Interchange and Girton had a high traffic accident rate, which has been controlled by the installation of average speed cameras.
Chief Constable Mick Giannasi commented: "At a time when the spotlight is very much on spending on camera enforcement, this scheme shows the benefits that may be achieved in terms of lives saved and serious injuries prevented, as well as the clear financial benefit."
The news comes after a study of speed cameras in 35 countries by researchers at the University of Queensland showed that the technology has a significant impact on reducing accidents.
