Calls for 1-year learning period to reduce traffic accidents

Traffic accident deaths and injuries can be reduced by making young people spend at least one year learning how to drive, it has been claimed.

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) is calling for a one-year minimum period for learner drivers in order to save lives and limit accident claims.

Despite an overall fall in traffic and motorcycle accidents, more young people are killed on the roads now than 15 years ago, the ABI claims.

The trade association has carried out a survey of 2,500 adults that shows support for tougher measures to reduce road deaths.

Three-quarters (75 per cent) believe that a one-year period for learning would be the most effective way of cutting traffic accidents.

ABI director of general insurance Nick Starling said: "A car is a potential lethal weapon, and we must provide more help to young motorists to better deal with the dangers of driving."

The news comes after researchers at Cardiff University suggested that young driver accidents could be reduced by banning them from driving at night and carrying passengers of a similar age.
