BT fined following fatal ladder accident at workRSS Feed
Telecommunications firm BT has been fined after an employee sustained fatal injuries in an accident at work.
David Askew, 52, died after falling from a step ladder while working at a telephone exchange in 2006.
Judge Deborah Taylor ruled that the company had not provided appropriate ladders, meaning that Mr Askew had to use a wooden ladder he found at the location.
BT was ordered to pay a £300,000 fine and costs of £196,000 but the company is reportedly planning to appeal against the conviction.
The Press Association reported the judge as saying: "This was a significant failing by BT, whose employees regularly work at height. In my judgment these failures by BT contributed to Mr Askew's fall."
This comes after Forth Steel Ltd was fined after an accident at work in which a two-tonne steel plate fell on the arm of an employee severely injuring it.
