BP hit by accident claim delugeRSS Feed
Accident claim payouts caused by the BP oil spill could reach £400 million as the company struggles to stop the leak that is devastating the southern coasts of the United States.
Compensation claims have flooded courts in the states affected by the spill, including Alabama, Florida, Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi with Lloyds estimating the bill to be somewhere between £210 million and £420 million.
Claims cover loss of earnings as well as lawsuits from the families of the 11 BP workers who were killed when the Deepwater Horizon rig exploded.
Survivors have also filed accident claim lawsuits against the company after suffering things such as smoke inhalation and post-traumatic stress, according to the Guardian.
BP is still trying to stop the leak after several failed attempts to do so.
The company said that while it is too early to say what the potential cost of liabilities would be, the cost of the accident to date amounts to about £684 million, "including the cost of the spill response, containment, relief well drilling, grants to the Gulf states, claims paid and federal costs".
