Asbestos accident claim victim support boost welcomed by ABIRSS Feed
The Association of British Insurers (ABI) is hopeful that a package of measures to help people with asbestos-related diseases could assist those making accident claims.
Lump payments from the 2008 mesothelioma scheme, which offers financial help to those suffering from the asbestos-related condition, will be increased by around 40 per cent from April, according to plans outlined by the government.
Commenting on the decision, ABI director of general insurance and health Nick Starling explained: "Last year alone insurers paid out over £100 million to mesothelioma sufferers, but it is unacceptable that it takes up to two years for these claims to work through the compensation system.
"We are pleased that the government is setting up a working group to review the system and hope that it will deliver real results."
Sufferers currently receive a minimum payment of £8,197 from the scheme, while the maximum payment will rise to £75,176, up from £52,772.
