Accidents at work 'go unreported'RSS Feed
People who suffer an accident at work may not be reporting what has happened to them, it is claimed.
Although the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) reports that the number of workplace fatalities for 2009/10 was 151, there are perhaps thousands that go unreported, according to the TUC.
The trade union body believes that around 20,000 people lose their lives every year because of their work, which is still a "conservative estimate".
It also points out that traffic accidents, occurring as part of their work, will claim the lives of 1,000 people a year.
Over 130,000 reported injuries sustained at work last year were either major or resulted in at least three days of missed work.
"However, almost one in every two injuries is never reported by the employer, so the HSE estimate that the number of injuries that should have been reported last year would be 246,000," the report said.
The news comes as the HSE is promoting safer working practices for farmers.
